It is interesting that most of the answers state that you should a degree in zoology, some with a minor in botany. While I am not a zoologist, though I wanted to at one point, I must say you do not have to limit yourself to a degree in zoology. In addition, I found it hard to find a college which offered a specific degree in zoology, only classes pertaining to zoology. In addition, it is not so much to a specific degree, but rather the background, knowledge, and experiences you have to help you become a zoologist. Other fields that may help you that you may want to consider is biology, fish & wildlife, etc. I studied animal and poultry sciences and got a B.S. in that field, and now I am currently working on my M.S. in Natural Resources... but the friends I had in my undergrad went in a number of directions after we graduated with their degree in agriculture (one went to work on a breeding farm, another went to a pharmacy school, while another went to vet school). Other graduates I met along the way went into fields that had nothing to do with the degree they got (one majored in biology, but is now working for a company that specializes in government contracts - far removed from the scientific field). I think you should chose what you feel is best for you, whether that is majoring in biology or zoology to become a zoologist, but remember, it is not the degree that will always get you the job, but the knowledge and experiences that you have to offer that will land you the job. Keep an open mind and see what works for you. Anyways, sorry for the rambling.

Well, I have a Bachelor of Science Zoology Major. So you need a zoology degree to become a zoologist. (To do anything worthwhile, and not do research for someone else, you'll want to get your Masters.)

You would want a Biology or Zoology degree. But think about this first: if you want to study animals, you need to know a lot about the plants that they interact with. So think about perhaps minoring in Botany, just for kicks. I tried that for a while, but I decided that I prefered the more general studies of Biology. Zoology was a little too "nitty gritty" for me. But, to each her own...

What work do you think you want to do...work in a zoo, for a government agency?? For work as a zookeeper, you will need a B.S. in zoology. Depending on what you want to do, you could also get a biology degree. I work as a wildlife biologist but I have a degree in zoology.
