You shouldn't need drivers if it is a standard DVDR drive. Windows has the drivers in its database. You may need a firmware upgrade, and that should be available from the Sony website. It seems to me that as you call it 'another useless piece of metal stuck to your machine' that the problem lies with you and your computer, and not the hardware attached to it.
