i cant seem to figure out why some states i have lived in have mailboxes at the end of the drive ways and the mailman drives around and puts the mail in the mailboxes and in some states they dont have mailboxes but a thing on the house on the front porch and the mail man parks his truck and has to walk up and down the streets putting the mail in. does any one know why this is?

This manner of mail delivery is due to city ordinances of the placement of mailboxes.

Its not a state issue it varies by delivery route. I can drive less than ten miles and find both methods in use. Its usually determined by how close houses are to each other. I also know of places where all of the mailboxes for an entire street are in one place.

Usually in a city envioronment the houses are closer together and the mail was delivered to your door.
In the suburbs(and some urban neighborhoods)the houses are farther apart, so they are required to put a mailbox at the street for the post office's convenience

I don't think it is a state thing, but rather a local thing.
