as others have mentioned, it will depend a lot on when you go, but $2300 is way too much. If you dig around a little, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1500 in peak season to $700 off-peak. it will also depend on where your final destination is. if you are flying into tokyo or osaka, it will be cheaper than if your final destination is okinawa or hokkaido (for example) as you will have to add another leg to your journey.
if you live close enough to NY to fly out of kennedy you will get a *much* better deal than flying from hartford.
yahoo travel often has good information on discount fares, but recently i have found that, if you book far enough in advance, buying directly from the airline (online) is only slightly more expensive and you often get better miles, better grade of ticket and/or a better route (fewer changeovers).
if you can afford it, i would highly recommend flying on JAL or ANA, or looking for a united or american codeshare flight where you will buy a united or american ticket, but actually ride on a japanese plane. the service is much, much, much better than on american carriers. you dont get any of that surly attitude and they treat you like human beings, rather than cattle...
