The location of your System Volume Information folders depend on the settings you've selected for System Restore. You can see these settings by opening the Control Panel and selecting the "System" Applet. Click on the System Restore tab and you can see the drives that System Restore uses.

To see the actual files, you need to set your explorer options to "Show Hidden Files and Folders". To do this open an explorer window by double clicking on "My Computer", or (my favorite way) by holding down the "Windows Logo" key (between Ctrl and Alt on many keyboards) and clicking on the "E" key.

Now click on the "Tools" menu, and select the "Folder Options" menu item. Click on the "View" tab and uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" checkbox. You can now see the folders in each of the drives called "System Volume Information".

Gaining access depends on which OS you are using and whether you are part of a domain. Here is a link that describes how to grant access to specific users. http://www.theeldergeek.com/system_volume_information_folder1.htm

If you're on a domain and the domain administrator doesn't want you messing with it, you won't be able to get to it.

Good luck.
