do you really enjoy large cities with all of their "challenges". how about something medium sized, as one answerer noted, between san francisco and san diego. or even north of sf, along the coast. i left san diego 14 years ago. the traffic alone was a nightmare. and now the gangs have automatic weapons, and it's far more crowded. all large cities have somewhat similar problems. how about the NW--oregon and wash. ? of all the southern cities you've noted austin seems the most sane. it's reputed to have at least a modest portion of the population not fixated on nascar and nuking iran. anyway, it's all very subjective, is it not? best of luck! ;-)

I've been to NY, San Fran, Ft. Laud, Atlanta, Boston, Pitt, Charlotte and Philly. Like all cities, traffic and high cost of living are concerns. Both are reasons I left the DC area more than 20 years ago for a small city (large town, depending on your point of view) in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Va. If your heart, or career, needs a big city, I won't be of much help, but if you wish to contact me through here, I always love to show off my adopted home town.

Austin, Texas is a winner if you can stand the summer heat.
San Francisco if hot summers are not in your list of idea places too live. However the expense of living in San Francisco needs to be carefully considered unless you can handle a drastic downturn in standard of living.

well being from Atlanta I might desire to be somewhat biased! in case you do stay far off from downtown that's an wonderful place to stay! Spent numerous time in Charlotte additionally and that's probably going one in all the quickest transforming into cities you will possibly desire to ever think of. that's long gone a protracted way and purely getting extra effective and extra helpful.

No cities! They are the worst places to live. Best idea is to stay right within reach. That way you can reap the benefits without having to put up with the crappy parts of city-life.
