When the lead singer spoke out against Bush before he sent the troops to Iraq, they started receiving death threats. The song is their way of expressing their hurt, anger, and frustration on how people turned their backs on them and mentioned to do harm to them and their families.

Laed singer Natalie Maines offered an opinion in London, around the start of the Iraq war in03, that she was embarassed to be from the same state as W., texas.
The nastiness of radio and tv in the south and the midwest was unparalleled and the Dixie Chicks were made to feel as though they were traitors and un-american for expressing a valid opinion.
Not ready to make nice is their comment about the whole situation.
There is going to be a documentary premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in the next weeks , which will discuss with the Chicks what the last three years has been like.

It's about the backlash the received from Natalie Maines' comments about how she is embarrassed to be from the same state as George W. Bush. Once she made that comment, commercial radio (most of it owned by giant corporations, such as Clear Channel, with little actual interest in music) dropped the group from all playlists. CD sales and ticket sales dropped.
Natalie is saying she's sorry the story got so blown up, but she is not sorry for what she said and she is "not ready to make nice" with those who sided against her.

apparently someone from the dixie chicks said something uncomplimentary about someone (im not sure who,) and because of it she recieved a threatening letter from someone saying that she'd better "shut up and sing or her life would be over." but the dixie chick wasnt going to let someone tell her what she can and cant say and do, so she wrote "im not ready to make nice."

"Not Ready to Make Nice," a plaintive, slow-burning track in which Maines asks, "How in the world can the words that I said/Send somebody over the edge?"
This all got started when Natalie said that she was ashamed of the fact that GW was from her home state of Texas. And said it on foreighn soil! I have only one thing to say about that...
You go girl!!!!

It's referring to that 3 year old incident where Natalie said she was ashamed that Bush was from Texas and the uproar that followed.
