I have a 2006 Outback (Legacy). I have had it for just a couple of months and only have 2,000 miles on it. There is a little highway mileage in there, plus one 500 mile road trip. I'm pretty happy with it now that I've lived with it for a while. It replaced my 1999 Honda Accord V-6 and it's quite similar in comfort. It is not QUITE as stable at very high speeds (like 90 or so), but below that, it's about the same. The tires might be a factor in high speed stablity, so I will look into that at replacement time, but in the real world, I am quite satified with stability. The only thing I don't like is the off-the-line power (or lack thereof) in the 4-cylinder engine. I convinced myself that it was fast enough, which it certainly is once you get it rolling, but I wish I could punch it and GO like the Honda. I'd trade it for a 6 in a second - yes, already - if my local dealer gets one in and I wish I bought the 6 in the first place. I drove a turbo, which has plenty of power once you get over about 3,000 RPM, but it's exactly the same off the line as the non-turbo 4.
My trip ended with a ride up a mountain. It was only a quarter mile trail and then some mud and grass, but the grade was about 40% and I never thought for a second that the car wouldn't make it. There were some decent ruts that presented no problem. I made this same trip in the Accord last year and several years before and it was a bit dicey. With the rain this year, I think I'd have been sliding quite a bit in the Accord and the Outback was made for it. It's not for going out there on a baja or anything, but it would do well for more civilized off-road use.

I've had 5 Subarus, still have 2 of them. Get the Outback for the cargo space. It will go more places than your minivan offroad but is mainly an ALLRoad car. Stay away from the 1999 2.5 motor.
Good luck

I got one. Its a 2001 Outback L.L. Bean. Its an awesome car. I love it. I had it for about 4 years now and got no problems at all. I love it because it can take me anywhere anytime, very dependable. I also like it because it has a lot of cargo room in the back so if you go camping it all fits. Anyways it depends what kind of offroading you talking about. If you planning to do hard offroading it will not do it. But if you plan to get over mountain passes, it is easy money. With my experience the car did good in sand and even better in snow. Never tried on mud but will bet you it will get through. If you want to get one, i recommend you do.

I HAVE A 01 LEGACY . I LOVE IT . IT BASICALLY GOES WHERE EVER U POINT IT. WITH THE EXCEPTION IT DOESN'T FLOAT. BUT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR MORE OFFROADING THE OUTBACK HAS ABOUT 2-3 INCHES MORE CLEARANCE THAN THE LEGACY.. AND THEY COME IN TOO ENGINE THE 2.5 4CYL. OR THE H6 6 CYL.ONLY THE OUTBACK.. LEGACY ONLY HAS THE 2.5 WHICH YOU CAN GET THE NATURALLY ASPIRATED OR THE TURBO..

Yes, my wife drives a 2003 Outback.
We like it a lot. We wish it were 12in longer for more cargo room.
It is a 4 cylinder, so not real peppy but decent mileage. We like how it rides high and the all wheel drive is a great feature. I have never taken it off road. I think these cars are meant for bad weather more than off roading. If you need to do a lot of off roading, I feel like you would be better off in a truck. It is comfortable and so far dependable.

No,I dont have one, but know a little about it.
No,I do not like the style of it or the comfort although the performace is not so bad. Why?Because the windows are not tinted, the rear lights quickly burn out, which you have to replace, and so many other things.THE GOOD THING ABOUT THE CAR is that its AWD.The car offroads OK,not good, not bad.
¤¤¤I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST THE NISSAN MURANO.THE HANDLING OF IT IS 10 OUT OF 10¤¤¤

I do not own one but I know about this vehicle (I am a car dealer), they are great vehicles but if you are buying it used watch for the transfer case, have a mechanic to check it for you, other than that they are great cars and comfortable if you are not a big guy.
