Persian Gulf, Mediteranian Sea, and

The US pulls into liberty ports in the island nation of Bahrain, and the city of Dubai in the UAE quite frequently. These are both in the Persian gulf, which allows the ships to support operations in and around Iraq and Iran... where I did most of my Middle east time.

The US navy rents out a pier in Bahrain, as well as a large shore facility nearby. A number of US minesweepers are more or less permanently stationed out there. They're dreadfully small things.

I believe there's also a USNS ship or two, a sort of oil tanker that lets other ships refuel on the go. There's a lot of them in various places, and I was never quite sure where it was actually stationed. Most people say it's not stationed in Bahrain, and suggest Dubai, Yemen, or one of those islands out around the Gulf of Aden or thereabout. Lots of tiny islands out around the Gulf of Aden and India used to be coaling stations for the US and the UK. Many of them still serve some military purposes, but their exact use and ownership is never made too clear. I know for certain there's at least one that repairs US ships, and probably stations a USNS ship or two, but it's super isolated, and super boring... with nothing going for it except the pretty coral reefs and perfect water.

I know that east coast sailors spend much of their time in the Mediterranean, and often sail through the suez canal, into the Red sea... and probably on to the Persian Gulf. I'd imagine they stop somewhere along the way, perhaps in Crete, Egypt, Israel, Lebannon, or maybe some place in Africa... but I never went there so I don't know for certain. I'd assume there are some tiny isolated islands around the area of Greece, but that is pure speculation. There is a navy base in Italy, and while that tends to be thought of as being rather a ways from the "Middle East" itself, it isn't too bad for a quick US ship or two.
