Start with a 401K plan which is tax deductible and if your employer matches, it's like getting free money. You won't miss the 5-10% of pre-taxed money but its a good start to savings. Now, as for the debts you have only you can justify if they were all valid purchases. There's a difference between wants and needs. You will have to make a conscious effort to either reduce expenses or increase income... ask for raise, get part time job, take in a boarder or roommate, cut out cable channels, buy that cup of coffee every morning, go out to eat three nights a week. I am not saying to stop living but review your expenses. I would think you could trim about $10-20 a month. Well, that's $120-$240 a year that could go to reduce your debts. Can you reduce $40 a month? That's $480 a year. Get out of the credit card trap as quickly as you can. There are agencies that can help with credit card debt that will reduce your payments and negotiate a reasonable repayment schedule. I know... I am almost out of one. In 4-5 months I will be near debt free.

Read Dave Ramsey's book "The Total Money Makover"
You can get it at the library for free!! In it he has a system for just what you're talking about.
Or You can call his talk radio show and if they talk to you on the air, they'll send you a copy..I listen to his "pod-cast" radio show every night..it's free too!!
Go check out his site
