For the same reason they want to live in other areas surrounding New York (CT and LI)... because that's where a lot of rich people live (similar to Beverly Hills)... plus it's close to the largest city in America. And it's not New Jersey. =)
But a lot of people move from upstate New York to Hollywood after they become famous. Look at Jesse McCartney, for instance.

I lived in NY 45 years. Now in Florida. Love the change of seasons in upstate NY especially fall. The school districts are great, the people are friendly, the lakes and wildlife in the region are abundant. However, depending where you are going , it can be boring, many of the towns still fold up the sidewalks by 8 p.m.
Don't foget taxes and the cost of living are above average. Yep, I get homesick, but I would not want to live there, when i go back i think "god this place is shabby, compared to where i am now"

Well it is cheaper than NYC...an hour by train and rural. I read where Liam Neisson lives in Poughkeepsi...that is about right. If you are not raised in a big city...it would be hard to live there. You miss the birds, trees, peace and quiet. I know I certainly would.

because it's peaceful in the suburbs. that's where i work, that's where i go to school, and that's where i live. whenever i take the train going to the city, i could almost feel the stress creeping up on me. and to think... upstate is not even stress-free, what more in the city.

I have no idea why anybody would want to live in that State. The Real Estate taxes are unconstitutionally high. When your taxes are higher than what your house mortgage, you need to move to Canada.

Rain, you are slightly incorrect. Rich people can afford to value their privacy more. Life outside the big city can be more peaceful.
