Don't fall into the traps of "girl/boy" hockey. I've played with girls... WOMEN that are better than a lot of the guys. New gear won't necessarily do you any good. If you are comfortable with what you wear and it works for you, stick with it.

You are going to have to deal with contact either way. The best advice is to keep your head up. When I played, I was an undersized forward. I found that the best way to deal with it was to keep my eyes open and be aware of my environment. Work on you "ice vision" and learn to avoid the checks as best you can. But you can't let it take away from your game.

Most guys will probably think it's cool you want to play, but there will always be some jerks, so be prepared and try to find out who they are... they will let you know fast.

Here are a couple of little things to do if you come across a few guys that like hitting you just because you are a girl:

1) If you are in the boards and a guy comes in to chuck you, jam your blade into the corner of the ice and boards and let them "accidentaly run into it." They get one or two of these in the gut and they will think twice.

2) Shortstick them. Let a couple of inches of the butt of your stick hang out and swing your elbow back. Let the butt catch them in the ribs.

3) Elbows. You don't throw it out at them, but if you see them coming in, turn. Let your elbow "accidentally" met their gut, but tighten your arm as they come in.

You have to make sure it looks natural or you will spend time in the sin bin. A lot of people will say these things are wrong to do, but the reality of playing the game is that you will need to protect yourself. Don't make the stuff obvious and don't just do it to do it, just use it on the jerks that won't play fair and only if the refs aren't controlling the game. When I did it, I waited to see if my coach or the ref would handle it, if not I did.

Don't worry about the gear. Don't be scared the equipment will protect you as long as their is no dangerous hitting (eg from behind). Talk to your coach privately, if you are that apprehensive about it if this is your first experience with body contact. If your coach is a good coach he'll know different strategies you can use to both prepare for being hit, and delivering a check.

It also depends what position you play. Although in every position if there is body contact in your league you can expect to both deliver and receive checks.

Also, don't let your teammates or opponents sense that you are worried about being hit. Teamates my try to test your mettle in practice if they smell weakness and opponents will definately do it in a game setting.

Before your season starts do some research on the net on how to safely deliver and receive checks. Also use the martial arts as a guide. Think about how in a karate demonstration the person screams as they break the wood, ice. What they are doing is verbally releasing their energy onto an inatimate object and you could pretend you are doing this with your opponent.

Good Luck,

Granted, it would desire to be somewhat uncomfortable even nonetheless that's thoroughly workable and it purely lasts for sort of three-7 days. you will get it like your sister yet who knows! I have been given mine at a snooze over party and did no longer know it till day after right now AFTER my basketball tryouts! have faith me, that's not frightening and your mom and sister have long undergone this besides so don't be afraid to communicate to them approximately it! in the journey that your fairly scared approximately it arriving listed under are some issues to look out for thus which you will possibly properly be fairly arranged: heavy discharge or first time discharge, cramping emotions on your abdomen, soreness, and moodiness. have faith me, it would not suck so undesirable! There are lots worse issues which you have been by using already! the 1st day of a era could be stunning yet after that that's a cake walk. If it hurts take Mydol, that's for sessions, and which will help. don't be afraid! you have become a woman, be proud! it will be in basic terms positive!

Don't be scared.... just go for it!

Only problem with being the only girl on a boy's team (I've done it).. is that you need to get your gear on in a separate locker room, or in the girl's restroom if there isn't a spare room.

The team will except you as a member of the team after you've played just a few games! Do it!! It's a great way to get incredible experience --- especially if you're shooting for a hockey scholarship in college someday! :o)

Play your game.
Take care of your body between practices and games.
Purchase the gear that you need.
Speak with the coach before you are scheduled to start, get to know what is expected.
Have faith in yourself, and be yourself.

usually girls play defense because they really don't get hit and you can almost let the forward go into the corner before you and then you can rub them out into the boards. but i'm not saying girls cant be forwards, if you played center you could roam in the middle and just keep your head up. good luck!
