Yahoo periodically changes the way the front page looks.
Take a look at some of the old Yahoo pages at
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.yahoo.com
Some other reasons Yahoo might have changed the page.
1) They want to make it look snazzier before Microsoft
releases Vista with Windows Live.
2) They want to reach a different audience
3) They want to redecorate the house
4) They found that this format brings in more revenue.
