I think we can be our best through will power, good examples, and self examination. You've got to have the drive to be good, and having examples that show you what is good always help, and being rational and mature enough to look at yourself and change what you don't like is one of the best things about humanity.

This seems to tend more to the social then to the individual. In context, Social culture will need to change. We moved from violence to peace and now we are heading back to violence again. The pace wasn't fast enough and now we are repeating the mistakes of the past instead of moving in a new direction.
My answer is education. Teach people to reason based on solid facts and not ideological principles.
One side is often relying on the fact that YOU don't know them.
How educated are the posters in the last link?

We can be noble or little better than animals. The problem arises when people deny either side and embrace a prefabricated identity.
We have manufactured a artificial world around ourselves and romanticize our own biases. In a way – humans are a product of countless generations of imagination. Now it is TV.

John Lennon said it best.
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Why should I tolerate those who terrorise others and steal their homes, rape their women, divide countries and people and destroy your soul?
Human? Do you know what it means to be human?
When you have the answer to that, you will stop violating human rights because even animals do not do what we humans do.
So learn to be human first and then pack your bags, get home and live like those you have violated and then maybe we can understand what it means to be human.
People live on the streets with nothing to their name because somewhere along the line someone violated their rights.
Is that human?
Why should I be tolerant? Dont expect me to be.

unless ppl become carbon-copies of ea. other, u'll always have problems. ppl come in all sorts of temperaments, dispositions, & ev. is convinced their thoughts, ideas, & opinions are the only ones that are right. we can try to achieve a more tolerant society but our flawed human-nature makes it very hard since ev.1's so dif.
