It depends on the breed of fish you have. With many fish the male is more brightly colored and also larger, although there are exceptions, but not many. If you want to ask more questions email me and I will try to help you more. I used to raise tropical fish as a hobby. Take care and God bless son.

It depends on the type of fish. If you have a fish like a guppy, molly, platy, or swordtail which are livebearer fish it is easy to tell. With guppies the males are prettier and havethe color all over and the females tend to be more clear. With the other fish I mentioned you can tell by the anal fin. The males have a gondopodium, making his anal fin apear clamped and straight. While the female has a regular shaped anal fin (triangular). Go here to see a picture, bottom of the pages.

If you have a betta, its also easy. The males have long flowy fins and the females dont.

If you have a goldfish or basically any other fish, you probably cannot tell unless you provide breeding conditions. Even then, its inconsistent and difficult. Post the type of fish you have and possible a picture so we can help you out!!

That completely depends on the fish. Some fish (such as guppies) are dimorphic (meaning 2 forms). The male has a long colorful tail. Other fish are monomorphic (meaning one form). These can be told apart by a few methods. Some males my have longer, pointed fins, some males may be more aggressive. Some females may hold the babies in their mouths (African mouthbrooding cichlids). One method that I know works in cichlids (but may not in other types of fish) is venting. You look at the vent (or the area the poop comes out). The male and female look a little different in this area but the fish have to be large enough that you can see it clearly. Maybe you can edit your question to add a fish type so this question can be answered more accurately.

Well that depends on the fish. For your age I would suggest Livebearers because it is easy. A livebearer has its babies live and do not lay eggs. A livebearer would be:

-Guppies
-Swordtails
-Platies
-Mollies
-Halfbeaks

A female livebearer will have its anal fin spread out like a fan, while a male's is pointed towards the tail. Male guppies are the ones with the most color when comparing them to the females and will "dance" in front of them when he wants a "girlfriend".

Generally the male fish is more colorful as opposed to the more dull looking females. The best way for me is to see which ones gets pregnant. Its a pretty good clue.

it would depend on what type of fish it is...egg layers are very diff cult to tell which is male and female...if you want to breed some fish try stareting with guppies, plattys, mollys or swordtails...they are easy to tell and they give live birth...good luck..
