Yes it's called overclocking. While it does increase your processor speed it will cause intense heat. Most people who do overclocking use fans and are careful because if not enough heat is being cooled then the motherboard will melt along with the processor. It's best to keep your room cold aswell.

*Edit* You can always buy a better processor. But depending if you computer isnt to old. If it is you will need a new motherboard. The mother board is cheap compared to the price of a processor.

Don't worry about it. Apparently you've never overclocked before, and it's more of a hobby than a necessity. If done incorrectly, your motherboard and CPU won't "melt", but they could short out from too much heat.

It is best to upgrade other components like the amount of RAM, video card (if you're a gamer), and the CPU itself. Since you didn't tell us what you have or what you use your PC for, it's hard to tell you which option is best.

You can increase RAM so that your computer works better when many applications are opened at the same time. You can't increase procesor speed. That comes set up with your computer and you can't change it unless you rebuild your computer or buy a new one.

You can overclock, but it is really not recommended unless you really know what you are doing or you are willing to take the risk of doing damage to your processor
