This may not work very well if you are newly PG. If you've been PG for a while, you can start at your pubic bones and genlty but firmly press in, slowly moving up towards your belly button. You should be able to feel the round, hard shape of your uterus. Early on it will feel kind of like a grapefruit. As you get farther along, the fundus (top of uterus) will go higher and higher up your belly. By mid pregnancy, around 20 weeks, it will be near your belly button.

I dont think you should be pressing down on your stomach to feel your baby...when baby is big enough for you to feel, you wont have to press at all. If you want to know where your uterus is to know where about your baby is situated, then ask your OB to show you the next time you have a prenatal visit.
