4 hi is when you want to drive around the trees at speed, 4 lo is when you want to climb the trees........
4 hi is actually for normal driving as my full time four wheel drive jeep is always in four hi. now when im in some slippery stuff and need the extra gearing i will switch it into four low. four low would also be a good choice if pulling a boat out of the lake or towing another vehicle out of a ditch

If you have a Ford 4x4 you can shift to high on the fly but with the low setting its best to be stopped put your vehicle in neutral and switch to low 4x4. This saves wear and tear on the 4x4 system.

HIgh would normally be used for general 4x4 use at higher speeds. 4x4 low would be used at very low speed situations when you need a little extra to get you out if you were really stuck somewhere or need to get over extremely treacherous terrain.

4x4 high is used on regular speeds like on the road and freeway.
4x4 low is for high engine rpm while the wheels spin slower. This is used mainly for offroad.

Low is for when you are really stuck or in some deep snow or mud use only when you are at low speeds... High you can use when you driving around town or down the high way you will hardly have to use 4 low...

4hi is a direct drive though the transfercase engaging both front and rear drive. 1:1 ratio 4lo is similar except the gears are "shifted" in the transfercase much like they shift in a manual transmisson to create a gear reduction. This ranges from 2:1 to 4:1 depending on model and may be lower with aftermarket gears. 4lo also engages front and rear drive ie. 4wd. the effect of 4lo is more torque (turning force) applied to the tires and less speed.

High is for sand and such where you can go fairly fast, but may need an extra tire to avoid spinning your wheels.
Low is for climbing and dealing with ruts, where you'll need extra torque.
