Absolutely! They are very smart, sweet, and social, and can learn lots of things, including their names, and various tricks. They also come in various colors and fur types, and some have cute dumbo ears. I have 15 right now (I have three baby girls that need homes, if anyone is looking in the SF Bay Area), and have had rats on and off for about 15 years. But don't get just one, they are very social and would be lonely without a buddy or two. Your best option would be to adopt from a reputable breeder, as breeders tend to socialize their babies, and choose to breed rats that will have fewer health problems than the rats that you would find in a pet store. You can do an internet search for local breeders or check the RATLIST.

Rats make great pets.... I would get more than one if you can't give one rat all the attention it needs..... remember to get all girls or all boys or you may find you get more than you bargained for. Rats use smell so, the more you interact with them, they remember you and can even be trained to do little tricks, if you have the time and patience. I have a huge fish tank which is used to house our rats..... less messy than a cage. Good luck with your pets if you choose to have some.

Definitely. Rats love human contact and are quite affectionate. Mice do not. You must realise that they have a short life span -- about two years I think.

You and your friend can consult books or the internet to learn the proper way to feed and take care of your pet.

Surprisingly, yes! They can be handled more than gerbils, since gerbils tend to be more prone to biting. Just be sure to wash your hands after handling-they are still disease carriers.
