The beatles (came along later then the 1950s), and elvis were considered "wild and crazy" when they came out. Rod Stewart was a downright "Freak" .
The biggest effect, of course, on "music" of today instead of then is the advent of mtv. I won't go into debating wether they had a change for the better or worse, but,

you still have the same themes (death in car crashes, broken hearts, tragic heroes, and unrequited love).
in the end, it's still all terrif!
