A million things.
It was black and white back then.
Most tv was live and not taped.
The tv shut off at about midnight I think and didn't come back on until the next morning.
There was only 3 networks and nothing else to watch, no cable or anything.
It seems like there were less commercials.
There was no swearing, nudity, or even simulated sex. Married couples slept in separte beds. When Cher showed her belly button on tv it was a HUGE thing.
Families watched tv together in the living room gathered around the one tv set they owned for the whole family.

Every family crisis could be easily solved in a half hour by Dad. Families consisted of a Mother, a Father and two siblings that always teased, but totally loved each other.

News was honest and unbiased, the government could be trusted (so we thought).

TV in the 50s was something the whole family could watch together. Reality TV was Ed Sullivan.

Today, disfunctional families are funny. Infidelity can be a running gag. Reality TV is eating bugs and horse testicles. You can't trust the news, they all have an agenda different from yours. If a politician is on TV and smiles, you're in trouble. If he frowns, you're in worse trouble.

I think television when it first came out, was more centered on family life where the mother stayed home, and the father was the leader of the house. The wife was always supportive- there was communication between family members. The children in tv shows gone by seemed much more remorseful for their actions that children in tv shows today. I also believe that there was more respect between characters.
