I have noted this phenomena as well. I strongly suspect it's because guys like to WATCH two girls together (or live in the HOPE that they will encounter two girls to watch).
In this society, guys are more concerned about / fearful of not projecting their maleness, while females in this society are much less concerned with not appearing feminine. It's the difference between calling someone a tomboy ("Who cares? Maybe she can fix my truck!") and being called a "fag"--that is, the submissive one in a relationship. This is also why females here can wear pants while guys in skirts are much less acceptable (even if they're called Shamus & they play the bagpipes).....Good luck with that!
