i have a 1994 acura integra rs 2 door and when i turn my car on in the morning the rpms shoot up to sbot 2500 rpms which is normal!!! but if put it in drive before it is totally warmed up the cars rpms shoot down to almost 0 (zero) and the car starts to jitter....i have done a tune up on the car...sparkplugs, oil, filter, wires, dist. cap, ignition coil, rotor and it stays the same..the muffler also shoot small sounds like "pooofpooofpoofpoof" which it didnt do before i got my valves adjusted do to a ticking in the motor..now th eickin in the valves has stopped but now te car jitters when its not totally warmed up....please anything at this point in time will help me out alot i really like this car and want it to work out for me! any feedback anyone may be able to provide will be helpful...thank you!!!

My first thought on this is that whoever adjusted the valves might have "overadjusted" them. Something's stuck, or sticking. I'd take it back to whoever did the work and tell them exactly what it's doing.

By the way, you need to look at your cold and warm idle settings too...I don't know if those are controlled manually or by a chip on your Acura...but a 2500 rpm cold idle is WAY too high. You need to have a good mechanic analyze this before something gets damaged.

I hope the valves are adjusted properly....this sure sounds like they are a little too tight. Sounds like the person didn't know what they were doing. This car will have hydraulic lifters and they have to be adjusted with around 5 to 10 thousanths clearance because when they pump up, they gain hieght. The person probably adjusted them with no clearance when the engine was warm. It's a very common mistake that people make when they think they are advanced mechanics but they just don't have the experience. That's the only thing that would explain the backfiring just after all of this work has been done. The intake valves are too tight and causing the high idle and then the really low idle when placed in gear. The exhaust valves are open enough to spit out some of the detonation. Fix it quick so you don't burn a valve. Good luck. Just back the rockers off a half of a turn. Hopefully that will do it.

Check the wires. Look up the timing sequence and compare the cylinders to the distributor cap. You may have two switched. Then check to see if all the plugs are firing with an inductive timer. A wire may have separated when you pulled the boots. If all these check out ok then re-spec the spark plugs for recommend OEM replacement. Are these platinum plugs? Older wires cannot provide the juice to power the platinums. Put the old plugs back and if the car runs fine, it's the plugs. Do the same for the wires, dist cap, rotor, and coil. If all else fails to find the cause, wait and let the car warm up, some cars need a little time to get used to the new valve adjustment.

One thought might be a issue with the catalitic converter. It could be partially plugged and when at high idle runs ok but once put under a load (in gear) the car start to shudder because of poor air flow. As it heat up, because it's a partial plug the area for the exhaust go get through gets wider to where it's not as much a problem. Have the converter checked at a place like Minneke.

Also, probably a good question for Car Talk on Public Radio.

it is possable the valves are to tight but unlikely and if you do back them off only go 1/4 turn not a 1/2 that is to much but i think thery are fine any time you do a valve adjustment you must readjust the air/ fuel mixture if it is to lean or to rich will cause this problem you got alot of answers from inexperianced people but i have many years of experience at this

who did your valve job check to see if they adjusted the valves right they might have overtightened them

This sounds like a cam sensor.
Or, vacuum leak.
Or, you forgot to plug in a wire to the distributor?

i know O2 sensors go too, try checking that or getting it replaced.

i had a CRX that did that, i didnt all kinds of crap and what you did, replaced that O2 and what a difference....
