Is the sound coming from the speaker or the mechanism?

It could be a slipping belt. If you stretch a belt and drop it on a flat table, it should spring back before it lands. If it creeps on the table replace it. It could be a worn pinch roller squeaking too.

Some sound distortion can occur if the felt pad is dirty or missing. Look under the center of the exposed part of the tape. If the little felt pad is missing, then you're doing damage to the tape. If the felt pad is dirty (from oil, or anything like that), then it will put deposits on the tape.
Dirty heads, or loose drivers can also cause some noise. But for the most part, when I got that squeaking, it was because of the felt tensioner.

when it's the tape you're hearing: it's ruining itself.
if it's not the tape, it's probably only the mechanics and it won't be harmful. you could try some oil.
