This past week alone, our network server at work has crashed 3 times and has been an ongoing problem for quite some time. Today we had our IT guy into check it out AGAIN and this time he asked if any staff were streaming music over the internet because even one person streaming music will use more system memory than if all 6 computers in the office were each running Quickbooks. I think our IT guy is stretching a bit for an explanation because my boss is quite heated that he has been w/o a computer 4 of the last 8 working days. Is this a valid reason for a network server to be constantly slow and even become unusable? I can understand music taking up internet bandwith but our internet is always fine whenever we have the problem...

I am in the process of getting a computer science minor and maybe sit for the A++ test so that I can take over IT but right now we are paying quite a bit to have the IT guy basically react to problems rather then preemptively solve and prevent problems...I kinda inherited the job of being the IT liason becuase i'm just a bit more tech savy then everyone else but even with my limited knowledge, this "excuse" sounded obseird...and I still can't figure out why he would have suggested that as the cause of an entire server crashing.

unfortunately we're under contract so unless we can find a way to void the contract the only thing we can do is to have the system audited by an outside firm so that our current IT can then make corrections GREAT:)...we're getting a new guy asap

How exactly is your server crashing? when someone states it crashed i assume they mean it locked up, or restarted itself. going off that assumption, lets pretend for a minute that someone is streaming anything, a crash should not occur. so here are some basic level trouble shooting guidelines. first, since the problems have started has anything been added or removed from the network? second, what wan technology are you using to access the internet and is it running through your server? third, what networking devices are you using? does your company have hubs or switches? if there are stached switches has he verified that spanning tree is working properly? Does he have Auditing setup?

Basically in a nut shell this problem can be caused by a lot of differenet issues, but if your IT guy has to ask if someone is streaming anything then he isnt proficent enough to know what he is doing.

Yea, he's full of it alright. Sounds much more complicated than what he is telling you. You need to get someone in there who knows what they are doing before it crashes for good!

Sounds like your IT guy is clueless.
