The old visual of the astronaut and the MTV logo drove home the message that this was not only one small step for young fans, but a giant leap for youth that sealed the fate of those watching and those not even born: young people’s music was as essential and significant as anything for adults, maybe even more so.
MTV's first commercial used the astronaut on the moon planting the flag with the MTV logo (rather than the US Flag), a sort of "first step" for the fledgling cable channel, making the statement that they were venturing into arenas heretofore untouched by other cable networks. The use of the astronaut has permeated nearly all of MTV's logos and works from then on.

As the music channel concept began to develop, there was a need for a memorable logo that would leave an impression on the viewers. MTV wanted something unique, yet nobody had a specific model in mind just yet. The most familiar is the moon landing scenario, which was the first logo aired on MTV. A white rocket launches and lands on the moon, and two astronauts implant the MTV flag on the moon’s surface. The ten-second broadcast ended with a voice-over announcing, “This is MTV, music television. We’re here all day, all night.”
the Apollo footage was representative of MTV’s achievements, groundbreaking efforts to be different from other cable channels at the time, and their impact on the music industry as a whole.
“We said, ‘Hey, let’s rip off man’s greatest moment.’ It seemed a rock & roll thing to do.”

The astronaut was sort of a logo for MTV when it first came out in their commercials.
Kind of making MTV referring to the "small step for man, giant leap for mankind" idea by being the first channel to focus only on Music.

The statues given to winners of the award are often called "Moon Men" because the statue is of an astronaut on the moon, one of the earliest representations of MTV.

They used the astronaut in their earliest advertising campaigns. Why they chose it back then is something I don't know.
