For the past 25 years someone has been planting a few 4X4 poles near the road in rural areas. About 20 long nails are sticking out of each of the poles with blue bottles attached. So they are blue bottle poles. What does this mean? They are more annoying than attractive.

It's only art if you understand it. So probably it's art to someone, but probably not to you. But even a weird ritual is art, they do it to understand some feeling, and you can only understand that feeling through that ritual... like going to church.

There are many definitions for art ,but one thing that good art does is that it takes something as benign and everyday such as a bottle or a 4x4 pole and manifests the meaning of the object into something beyond itself. Take for example the American flag, which though I am not saying is art, takes everday things that we see such as stars and stripes and manifests their casual meaning into something beyond itself: freedom, hope, glory etc... Good art will at best help you to rexamine the world in which you live in. In the case of the art that you have observed for the last 25 years, I am guessing that this is probably just folk art. Art which is created by naive artists, people without any training, and whose meaning probably doesnt exist beyond its aesthetics, i.e..art created for looks rather than meaning.

sun-aged bottles can sell for quite a bit - people stash them outside like that to cause the sun to color them faster
