Other systems (TVs, Audio equipment etc) age real fast. Why are most driving manual still.
(I'm not for or against either, just curious!)

Automatics have been around since the 50's....and the basic principle has not changed that much.

I've owned / driven lots of gear changing system (except 'flappy paddles'), manual, automatic, column shift (US), tiptronic. They are all good in their own way.

Manual for a more engaging drive, greater control of the car and to give my left leg some thing to do...
Automatic is great for both long drives & start/stop traffic. A real 'no-brainer'.
Colum shift - why? OK, it keeps your hand pretty much at the wheel at all times, but feels very detached for the driving experience.
Tiptronic - best of an auto box - with the option to manually select up & down. Lots of fun...or easy cruising.

Currently I drive a manual, but my last car was an auto - like them both for the above reasons.

Driving a manual transmission vehicle gives the driver the feeling that him or her is a part of the vehicle. You are more responsive to the vehicle, more responsive to road conditions as well as more alert. There are several reasons that one might prefer manual over automatic, here is just a few. Better fuel economy, the ability to choose the gear that you prefer at any given moment. Truck are almost always manual because it gives the driver to choose gears based upon the load weight that the truck is hauling as well as road conditions. Going down hill a driver may choose to cruse the hill in a lower gear than one would do on a flat road. Pulling a steep hill may require a lower gear also. Lower gears pull but at a lower speed than a higher gear and engine speed is also higher while in lower gear. Higher gears are for cruising and uses less fuel and a lower engine speed. Bottom line, manual vehicles are more fun to drive but require more mental attention and physical and this may be the reason that older persons almost always want an automatic vehicle.

In my fleet, I keep automatic Mercedes, which are really easy to drive, for a long trip, maybe into a city, and I also have manual Opel saloons and coupes, retro rear-wheel drive drivers cars, and an Alfa Romeo which is similar. Manual is very much more engaging, involving, rewarding. Auto is about less effort. Do you own running shoes and dress shoes? And appreciate their qualities, in the right circumstance.

What sources are you getting your information from? A Majority of americans drive automatic transmission vehicles, not manual. People that prefer to drive a manual like it because it gives them more control over the car, and also gives them something to do while driving.

Because automatics are newer it doesnt mean they are better.

Both manual and automatic have their good and bad points and a lot of people simply prefer manuals even if they have tried automatics, including city dwellers who spend most their time in traffic, like myself.

I am sure that more automatics than stick shift are on the road.
In the 50s a lot of people stayed with stick shifts because automatic transmissions were very expensive. About an additional $600. on a car you bought for $2,300. (full sized Chevy or Ford!)

Manual cars are cheaper, for the consumer. But don't know why companies still build them. However, a manual car is known to be faster thatn an automatic one.

I don't know where you're from, but manual transmissions are very hard to find in LA. Everyone here is shiftless.

I can tell you, though, that working a stickshift, clutch, gas, and brake in traffic that stops every 20 seconds is a royal pain in the butt, and not fun at all.
