That's like comparing a roast chicken to your mother's bathrobe. You just can't compare some things. But I have a tip for you. Judging from your posting, your attention span is pretty limited and you have way too much misdirected energy. Guys like you kill yourselves very early into your bike ricing uh, er, I mean riding career. Usually doing stupid bike tricks. You might think twice or three times about getting something that requires the concentration and skill that riding ANY motorcycle demands. If you decide you still want to ride, TAKE THE MSF SAFETY COURSES I AND II.

You want my opinion? I don't like crotch rockets. I don't condemn or ridicule them the way the riders of those things do Harleys, but I have no interest in them at all. I'm a Harley guy through and through, and have been since I was a teen. What anyone rides is up to his own taste; I happen to prefer Harleys to anything else. You probably will end up on a japper. Different strokes for different folks, but if you continue in your desire to ride, you ought to calm the f'uck down, take the course and insure that you live to enjoy your hobby. I've enjoyed it for 37 years with very few scrapes, scratches and bruises. Only a couple of breaks, too. Also, mind your own business; people will ride what they ride and if you get caught up in judging them, then you miss the point. It's the two wheeled experience that we share; not the differences in riding preferences.

Depends on what you want the bike for.
Sport bikes are not good for any distance touring. You end up with back, shoulders, wrists in pain because you are putting most your weight forward. They are a blast to ride around town, but too many sport riders tend to use the regular roads for their stunts. They get nailed by the cars behind when they screw up a wheelie. Gives the responsible riders a bad image and most cage drivers won't give you any repsect on the road because of it.
Cruisers/Touring bikes are made for long haul riding. Lot more comfort due to better seating position. You can ride all day and half the night without the painful results if you tried it on a sport bike.
Choppers are some awesome looking machines- not as good for longer rides, but better than a sportbike.
Your comment about hard to tell the difference in sportbikes? True- but most real riders want their bike to stand out, to not be like the others. Interesting you say you can't tell the difference in Harleys as if that was something bad, but then make the same statement about the sportbikes like it was a good thing. Most serious riders personalize their bike with mods, accessories that make a statement about themselves.
Loudness and tone can be changed using different mufflers, and changing the baffles in those pipes.
I tend to choose a metric over H-D due to cost and reliability issues. You can get more bike for the money going metric than going H-D. That means more money left over to make that bike exactly unique and mine.
IF you go on 2 wheels, take the MSF classes. They teach you some survival skills that do work, even if you already know how to ride. And that class certificate will decrease the cost of insurance for you and your folks. Don't try to keep up with the more experienced riders when they push their limits- you will crash. I have a cruiser and a sprot bike. The cruiser works to impress Harley owners and people that know little or nothing about motorycycles. Its beautiful, loud and chrome. The Sport bike impresses me and real motorcyclists. I dont feel like a poser on my ST1100. I feel like a real motorcyclist. So, buy one of each, rather than the Harley , get a Jap Cruiser for half the money and twice the reliability.

If you don't like a cruiser, don't get one. Some people find them very comfortable for long distance riding, though - a rare quality among the more extreme sportbikes.

I wouldn't recommend a sport bike over 500 cc for a first bike; the Ninja 250 is a good choice and more comfortable in some ways than many of the bigger sportbikes.

to me the sport bike is ugly if I'm going to lay across something it will be my ol' lady not some crotch rocket true they are fast but they sound like a sewing machine on steroids I have no problem telling the different models of Harleys from each other. never have Its the Jap crocth rockets that all look alike to me. When up in the mountains the crotch rockets have to drop down a gear or to to get any speed . On a hog you just roll on more throttle. Oh by the way loud pipes save lives. You always hear But Officer I did not see the biker If they can't hear a Harley coming the battery in their hearing aid must be dead.

Harley's are definately cool. But my preference and fascination is with the Japanese sport bikes. I like them because they have a futuristic (Neo Japan) look. And I guess I like alot of Japanese products in general. Video games (Japanese rpgs) , electronics, cars etc...
They really make good stuff!
(Just got a Ninja 250 too BTW!)

If you like the sport bike better, then get that. There's no better or worse here, it's just your opinion.

I like all bikes except the enduro's or mountain touring bikes.

I prefer sport over Harley, but Harley's are fun too.

A jap bike is more dependable and a whole lot less expensive than a harley.I would much rather have the jap bike than the over priced too loud and uncomfortable harley. jap bikes not only look cool and fast they are . re gaurdless of what you choose please ride with respect and stay at a safe speed. also check to see if a training course is available in or near your area. your a teen. good luck

each brand has it's following, the harley's are a finely detailed and a classy motorcycle. The japanese bikes are also a very good bike, prolly the best at mass production motocross and super bikes but like I said, each brand has it's following it's not that one is better than the other.
