why does a compass always point north???

Because the needle is magnetic. Magnets have north and south poles, just like the planet does. Here in the northern hemisphere, the magnet is drawn to the northern magnetic pole of the planet.

A compass works on the earths magnetic field. The needle has a slight negative charge which alines with the north poles positive charge/field.That's why a plastic compass with a plastic dial works as well.
