Of course true respect is earned. But it's earned by teachers doing exactly what they say they will do. As a young teacher, I learned very quickly that the best way to earn respect was to never accept anything less.

In an ideal world, you should be given the amount of respect you give other people, but in the school world, students never abide by this. They test you to see what you're willing to accept, and based on that they decide on how much respect you're worth.

This doesn't mean that teachers shouldn't respect their students, it just means that teachers have to have extremely high expectations on the amount of repect they expect from students, and when they don't get that, they must call the student out.

Respect in gangs or just courtesy Both ways your going to have to show the children something they do not know to gain there respect and after that hook them. Direct them into studies and fields of interest. Incorporate lessons from there personal experience and contact upper class men to find out what they respected the most in the teachers they liked most. Catch phrases 30 second sound bites is how these kids are hooked. Ever play there video games? Good catch phrases are in the USA Constitution. And what the kids read on the Internet. Start a Class room blog and have the computer kids post every day and the ones less fortunate to post while at school daily happenings. Stories about abusive parents! Get them to open up! And As editor You Keep A Lid on It! And with a little luck they will remember you and seek you out for wisdom and advice years latter.

Society no longer respects teachers, why should the students?

If I were a teacher, I would demand respect from the day one. I would deal with problems in my own class and see how far the students are willing to go. I'd rather see the student break the law and assault me rather than I take the fall due to politically correct BS. Once the boundaries have been established, education can take place in harmony.

Yes, as a teacher you must demand respect, but you also have to model respect and show that you respect your students. That way you will earn their respect. My positon always was that EVERYONE respect everyone else in the class at all times.

Chow!!

Affirmative. Respect is not only a tool of learning but also a lesson in "self" respect. If you demand respect form your students, you will instill in them the same idiom. It may be pain-full for them now but will serve them well in the "real world".

If you do not receive respect from your students then one of two things has occurred: 1. you haven't earned it, 2. they don't have respect for them self's.

Show respect to the teacher at first. If this person doesn't deserve it you will know shortly. Anyone that says respect has to be earned is correct, but you need to give it first, before the person has a chance to deserve it.

no one should DEMAND respect, they should earn it. I;m studyign education at university, but one thing i've learned EVERYwhere is that people will NOT respect you just because you demand it. They may FEAR you, but that's very different.

Which children, the best way to have a good student-teacher relationship is to EARN their respect by respectign THEM, being fair, helpful, equitable, understanding, etc.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

That's a GOOD one!!

Teachers, the group that brought us things like "peer mediation" and the bell curve (which, incidentally, helps everyone drift toward 'normal', while Nature works the fringe).
If a teacher wants to be respected, they have to get it the old fashioned way: they earn it by being a leader, not by conforming. Students aren't dumb to start with, modern schools make them that way.

As a teacher you should earn respect from students by respecting them not expecting it because of your title. Respect in any way, shape, or form should always be earned.
