As the population drops (starting in about 40 years) things will get better for the planet. Once we are gone (75-150 years) it will only take about 1 million years for the planet to heal itself.

As regular humans with barely any say in the current government we should:
Not use as much gas
Not eat from fast food restaurants as the slaughter houses anf factories who create flavours, etc. Really use a lot of gas
Buy clothing from thrift stores because factories that make clothing also use lots of gas
Not burn wood on a regular basis
Not litter
Recycle
Walk a lot
I heard somewhere that if everyone rode their bike to work/school and didn't drive for one day a week we could cut back on pollution a lot.
Turn off lights when they aren't in use, not because light bulbs add to the problem but because of the way electircity is generated
Not do anything that requires gas...
If the government were to take part in this, they would fund scientists to come up with new sources of energy, and start funding for wind and solar power. They would also require that these alternate sources be used in factories.

we all need to: reduce, recycle, reuse; buy the hybrid car, not the Hummer, grow your own food, ride your bike, carpool, take the bus, take the train, walk, buy products without excess packaging, etc., etc. most importantly, support politicians who have a firm grasp of the dire straits this planet is in and SUPPORT THEM! America needs leaders who can see beyond their next kickback; people of HONOR who know what`s right and are willing to get the job done--vote for someone whose ideas scare you the least, i guess.... for those readers from outside the U.S.--we`re not all "ugly americans", we know our gov`t is "mostly" screwed up, and we would give anything to see things change.

simple, create cars that run off of 100% non-polluting resource.
Thats it.
If cars didn't pollute, we wouldn't have this problem.
Everything else that pollutes like factories, or trains, or boats or cows, everything else is trivial compared with cars.
