The city began on August 30, 1836, when Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allenqqv ran an advertisement in the Telegraph and Texas Registerqv for the "Town of Houston."

The Allen brothers named their town after Sam Houstonqv and persuaded the Texas Congress to designate the site as the temporary capital of the new Republic of Texas
