Yes, your modem is for dial-up not for Ethernet cable, Modems are not cheap, but are necessary for translating the Phone cable into and ultra-fast Ethernet connection.

Yes, you do need a DSL modem. This is not the same thing as a dialup modem, which probably is already in your laptop. I've never heard of a laptop that comes with a DSL modem.

What the phone company delivers is a digital service over your regular phone line. What your computer expects is ethernet. That's not the same thing. The DSL modem makes that conversion.

I'm surprised your DSL provider doesn't supply the modem for free. Have you asked them if they have some sort of plan where they give you the modem? You don't have to buy their modem because other companies make compatible ones. Linksys is one example. $40 or $50 is about what you'll have to pay.

The one advantage to getting it from your provider is that you'll pretty much be guaranteed that it'll work. Plug and play. Not necessarily the case if you get a different one.

Hang on a sec & I'll bet other Yahoo! answerers who have gone from DSL to Cable modem'll almost give it to you.

Laptops come with dialup modems. If your phone line is digital, the co shud have prvideded the DSL modem.

If your laptop has built in Wi-Fi (802 a/b/g), then all you need to do is to go to a Wireless "Hotspot", which are basically servers that can be found at restaurants, libraries, airport terminals, etc.

Or you could create your own, by buying a router.
