First, I would not over-react because you have no way of knowing who threw it. I think I would say, "Cute!! Really cute. I thought I was teaching a group of bright students, not children. Now let's stop such foolishness and get down to our task--learning." Then I would just go on. If it recurred, I would then take more serious action and maybe try to find out who the culprit was. After class, one of the students will be glad to tell you, and then you can later take the culprit aside and have a talk with him/her discussing the expectations you have for all students in your class.
Chow!!

Depending on your acting ability, you could writhe in pain, fall to the floor, gasping, "Paper!! That's my kryptonite!!" Then, just lay there. 30 seconds is a long time for most students. After a few laughs, some students will become concerned and and may even blurt out the name: "John, what did you do?" Now you have a name and a subject for an essay: "If you were a superhero, what ONE power would you want and what ordinary item would be your kryptonite, e.g. cookies, wheat back pennies, an English accent, etc." If nobody reacts you still have an assignment and you tell the class they can thank the anonymous and villainous paper fiend.
Seriously, start using an overhead projector so you can face the class.
I do like the first idea, but I don't think I could pull it off. I am not that good an actor.

u can turn around and say
U know when i was young i did the same thing and i thought it was funny and u know what? my teacher thought it was funny too
u know Y? because he gave the whole class detention!!!
and now i get it!!!
HAHAHAHAHAH
and then laugh histerically
then stop drammatically and say if anyone would like to tell me who it was after class, im all ears..and then laugh again!
hopefully the teachers pet or the the good students that are scared of their parents will stand up and tell u who it was..or the students will mutter the person name like, Thanks alot so and so..
OR a FUnner WAY
u can tell the whole class, u can have a paper fight!
But heres the catch..
They can only hit the person who did it..
paper fights are fun and kids appeal to it.
Unless ur students are like "Dangerous minds" kids than they will turn the culprit in and plus u get the satisfaction of seeing him seeing how it feels..and its the students decision too!
or u can do it the stern way
Turn around and say..U will get nowhere in life, if u disrespect people. u will get no job no girl or man, or even a cat and dog with that attitude. All the students who saw, learn a lesson right now on how not to act if u want to go somewhere in life....
Then pick up the paper, look at the students, crush it again..and say or else ur disrespectful actions will just take u to the trash!
and then throw it in the trash can!
oOO so dramatic
u should let the class know they are a team on a mission to pass this class and they can help each other or break each other
lol sry if these tactics sound so movieish...but hey try it out and do tell me what happened!!!!!!!!

I would have each class memeber write on a piece of paper why they thought you deserved a paper wad thrown at you. Have them also write down what they would do in the event it happened to them. Each person is to write down who they thought threw the wad. Actually I would pick up the wad to see if there was any writing on the paper that was thrown. Why didn't you hear who was wadding up the paper? All in fun and do nothing with all the answers.. Enjoy the results.

While I adore the idea of turning the joke on them, what I would probably do would probably be more along the lines of turn around silently, pick up the paper, walk over and throw it away, and say, "I don't appreciate that," and continue.
If it happened again, then I would probably ask who needed their paper back and attempt to flush out the culprit as coolly as possible.
Thing is that I almost never have my back to the whole class: years of theatrical training always taught me to "cheat out" toward the audience, and my chalkboard's almost too ugly to use anyway.

Thats a tricky one. If you ignore it they might just think you are an idiot and an easy target and keep doing it, but if you say something like "Next person who hits me with a paper wad gets a detention", obviously someones going to try it and see if you can guess who it was. I dunno. I guess I would just be honest and say " I really don't appreciate being hit with paper wads." ?? I dunno. Good luck!

Not sure, but be sure they know that if something like that happens again real trouble will follow. If you don't, you may spend the entire year paying for being too soft. If no one admits to who did it, give a large group detention.

This is taken from a scene in the movie, "187" starring Samuel L. Jackson.
I'd turn around and start shooting the whole classroom. Bet no one would ever think about doing that to me again.

i would say that i am not here to deal with loosers, if any of you think that you come here to disrecpect others, just step out of da class and dont come back, I will give them a quiz and count it towards their grades and give a lot of homework
