There is no 'official language of the country' under US law.

Congress has declared that as part of their internal rules, English is the official language for conducting Congressional activities.

But the Supreme Court ruled, back around 1916-1918, that Congress could not prohibit other languages from being taught or used in the United States, as a content-based violation of the 1st Amendment freedom of speech.

So, to make English the official language, in any legally binding sense more than Pepsi could be the official softdrink of Congress, would require a Constitutional amendment.

you be responsive to, all those of my forebears who got here to this united states found out English with a view to have the skill to talk with the main suitable share of the inhabitants, and that's fairly lots what an 'genuine language' is. So, definite, i think of so. Heck, even people who did not to migrate communicate English! there's no denying the unifying outcomes of a hardship-loose tongue and a commonality in cultural observances, like case in point, Thanksgiving. And, with each and all of the divisive efforts leveled at us over the years, we desire each and all of the commonality we are able to scrape at the same time. And, to Walter B--living languages have transformations and differing flavors, using fact human beings variety, yet as long as they could understand one yet another, this is nonetheless working. in case you come across it too complicated, consistent with danger you're able to evaluate retiring to someplace the place the language is greater homogeneous. BTW, tha Gaidhlig agam. additionally a touch Spanish, a dab of French, a smidgen of Greek, and that i do communicate Latin, the two vulgate and patrician. I also have a honest Midlands accessory. so which you at the instant are not the only one right here who qualifies as semi-polylingual. yet I nonetheless think of the country desires a unifying tongue, and English has the historic, and as yet numeric, element.
