"Mercedes" cars were originally made by DMG (Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft). The name was not the daughter of one of the founders of the company, but rather a German car dealer and enthusiast named Emil Jellinek - he had his daughter's name painted on the cars for good luck.

About the model names...the letters tell you the "class" of the vehicle - C, E, and S are the most common. S-class cars are the higher end vehicles with larger engines, while C-class is the most basic models with the smaller powerplants. E-class is a nice happy medium.

The number part of the model gives you the engine size. An E 350 would have a 3.5 liter V6, while the S 500 has a 5.0 liter V8.

boobatuda is correct expect Jellinek was Austrian, he lived in France and started a car dealer he bought cars from the Daimler Motroren Group. He asked that they name the car after his daughter Mercedes. Mercedes is derived from a Spanish Christian name meaning mercy. Daimler and Benz latter joined and became Mercedes Benz. Also the engine in the DMG car was designed by Maybach.
