sos means help, but the letters don't stand for anything. Its just recognisable when calling for help in morse code as it consists of 3 dots and 3 dashes. The number 911 doesn't mean anything, but it's easy to remember and distinctive when you need help in an emergency...same principle.

rhianna just used it because it means "help"

Save Our Ship, a distress signal used in the Navy. It's easy to transmit in Morse code because the "S" is three shorts (tones, clicks, light flashes, whatever), and the "O" is three longs.
In Rihanna's song, she's using it to call for help, which I think is a verse right before the chorus.
I think it's a bad remix of "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell, but that's just my own jaded opinion, since underneath the avatar's fire-gear is a dyed-in-the-wool rock'n'roll fan.

the letters SOS do not stand for "Save Our Ship" or "Save Our Souls". They were selected to indicate a distress because, in Morse code, these letters and their combination create an unmistakeable sound pattern.

nternational distress signal. The letters do not stand for anything, such as 'save our souls,' they are simply very distinctive and easy to remember in Morse code (· · · – – – · · ·). Replaced the more awkward CQD (– · – · – – · – – · ·). In voice communication 'Mayday' is used instead.

Probably the same thing it means in real life (save our ship). She just used it because it is a common way to say "help".

In the WWII mess hall, sos meant "sh*t on a shingle", which was creamed meat over toast. It also stands for "save our souls" & "save our ship".

It's Save our Ship, means somebody help us or to make it more personal save me. Hence the S.O.S. someone save me.
