Lewis and Clark were commissioned by President Jefferson to explore the territory known as the Louisiana Purchase which Jefferson purchased from Russia for very little money. 17-18 states were eventually formed with the additional land. Lewis and Clark led an expedition and explored the territory that stretched from Louisiana to what is now the state of Washington.

The United States under T. Jeffferson bought the claims of FRANCE [not Russia !] for the country west of the then-United States. Jefferson funded an exploration of the territory- the expedition was led by Meriwether Lewis with the assistance of William Clark.
Lewis received his orders from President Jefferson in Washington, D.C. and started out from there. Clark joined him in St. Louis, Missouri.
