I hope they don't accept us anyways because who wants to be part of the EU. It is not about being modern or not. It is an economic issue. Turkey does not need the EU. Yes, believe it or not the EU needs to trade resources with Turkey and has been doing so since long. Turkey will not gain anything truly positive by joining the EU. The people inside Turkey who really want it to happen are people who want to make business under better terms, or are the type of people who are jobless and believe they can travel to Europe freely without visas and will have work permits. I think most people fail to understand that Turkey is already part of Europe since long and has not really got strong ties with the Middle East. So I think Turkey does not need to, sort to say, beg to be in an union illusion which is not accepting it anyhow with open arms. They will take poorer countries than Turkey under their wings and have done so in the past. It is just a political push and pull and politicians like to participate in illsuinary things to keep the general crowds busy with false hopes of a bright future. Who says Europe within 20 years will be strong and united. There is so much that can be written that its not worth it for 2 points. By the way Winnie the Pooh a childrens book about pigs? I tought it was about the adventures of a dog and a bear. Besides in Turkey you can buy pork meat at approriate places. Afterall if people dont like it there is democracy
they can eat what they want. In Turkey the people and goverment do not impose restrictions on foreigners as well as local people
the way some people think according to false mass media that wants to impose their values in the world. Do not forget movies are not made in holywood only for the box office. They are sometimes made to play with young minds and impose on to them their ideology. Why want anyone read Turkish publications at a remarkable level or number. Why not watch movies that are Turkish. They exist but there is no powerfull enough a media to reflect it onto the world hence we cant even voice our opinion in a mentionable way. I take your question as been born from all this type of a background being the cause.

Half of it is pretty much British occupied anyway, and since it's likely Ruassia will join someday (in the very distant future) it seems anything goes. Although, it's means Turkey will have to agree to the EU constiution - abolishing state punishment/executions etc will definitly have to go, so it'll take a lot of crap beforer it happens, and whether it happens to be a good thing to the rest of the EU is un-bloody-likely (just to be an uneeded pain in the **** I think). But yes, they've been considered and official candidates. Why can't they put pressure on a country that actually has something to offer I suppose is another question.
I read a couple articles saying that 2015 is the earliest the country can join anyway becuase of the number of reforms it has to comply with and the 'considerable costs Turkey's accession will involve'.
To be honest though, I really couldn't care less. It'll probably happen anyway, even if it shouldn't. I think they should just jump forward 40 years, and pretend Europe became the world's dominent superpower and was economically as strong as the U.S, and just get on with strengthening relations with the East. (India and China in particular.) Setting Europes eyes on one of them instead of Turkey means far more potential. I say forget the EU and call it something else so we can ignore geographical issues and pretend that China's actually in Europe - Eurasia. Perfect. China would get rich quicker than it would otherwise, and with no compition with India as the race to the world's next superpower over the next half century, and Europe would be in a position to tell the rest of the world how it should be run. Not by bombing the f**** out of countries for their beliefs but by actually ATTEMPTING something called DEMOCRACY. Which may actually work. Finally, establishing a worthy counter-weight to the over whelming dominance of Mr.Star & Stripes if you know what I mean.
And being a vegetarian, doesn't help my attitude toward turkey. (Sorry.)

I must admit I am troubled by this, in that, Turkey is a country which straddles the East and the West. It is a secular country but predominately Muslim. To criticise it for banning something is wrong, only last week we were saying that Tom (of Tom and Jerry fame) should not be shown smoking. We all have particular issues but, if Turkey wishes to join the EU that must be a positive. Turkey knows what it must do to satisfy the criteria for joining the EU, if it does this isn't that a positive step.

Considering the character of the people is more closly allied with Arabic countries than Europe, the obvious answer is no. However, the real question is about money and power. Would the Europeans be better off financially with Turkey in Europe so that we can get the oil out of Iraq, and would we be safer with Turkey on our side, rather than allied with people like Syria or Iran?

No I do not think so... and not because of some vacuous reason due to a Disney movie. I think they should not be admitted because they are geographically, religiously and politically excluded from the west. Also, if the EU goes through the whole thing and admits them, it would be one of the worst things that they could do as the economicy of the EU would plummet. (Look at what happened with the inclusion of poland.)

No, certainly not.
Turkey is located in Asia and has an Asian culture, way of life, and religion, completely incompatible with the essentially Christian culture and liberal traditions and attitudes of Europe.
We have not been told yet, but after Turkey, there is Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, waiting to apply and Turkey will support its fellow Muslims. There will be no end.
The European Union is for Europeans

NO WAY! It will be the downlfall of Europe! The end of European civilization. Hordes of uncivilized barbarians will destroy what is today known as Europe, replacing it with incest, sheep-f*cking, yurt huts, minarets, muezins and jannisaries. An immediate crusade is badly necessary right now, to clense the holy land of Minor Asia from turkish trash and save the cradle of Western Civilization, Europe!

As a Turk...i don't want to join EU.
If you decide one day to invite us... I will tell you to go back to your homes...call historians from Turkey,England,USA,Russia,Germany,Armenia and France....after that assemble a meeting and let them discuss this Genocide crap in the name of humanity and science.
You've all decided that Turks did this and Turks did that in your councils and senates. But you've never asked the opinion of historians(sorry you did...Armenian historians only)
But i can understand you...you don't want to be alone...Germans vs Jews....English vs Natives all over the world....Spanish,Dutch,French... even your puppet Greeks killed and pillaged during their retreat from my lovely Anatolia.
Only after this situation is resolved we may think about joining your precious union.Until that time your union will continue talking while USA is getting whatever they want from the middle-east and Asia.
Oh...and don't tell me that some of my politicians are begging you to accept Turkey.
Things will change my friends.20-30 years might be long for humans but it's short for countries.Better politicians will come in time.Until that time i hope not to see you or your pathetic ways of trying to insult my country.

Turkey demand to enter in EU since many years (maybe 20-30 years), EU always ask Turkey to change their law, change their standards, change their constitution, disagree with USA about war in Irak because of EU pression (not a bad thing...) etc. EU deal some business things with turkey by saying to Turkey : sign it if you want to enter in EU one day... Then Turkey did a lot and a lot of things to enter in EU, because EU want it.
And now, what's happen, it is time for Turkey to integrate EU, but people are afraid because they are "different", politics blame them because it is "muslim terrorist country" and then, now cards have change and Turkey effort to integrate EU are unusefull, Turkey can't enter EU because they are not WEC (White European Christian)...
Then I don'y know if it is a good idea to admin Turkey in EU, but since many and many years, EU promit Turkey to integrate EU if they change and deal a lot of things (diplomatic & business) with EU... Now it is time to debate about Turkey integration and Turkey is a democracy not the perfect one but not worst than US. Will EU politics take their promise within the next years ? Will EU politics will integrate Turkey even if EU people don't want it because of kind of xenophobia & populism ?
