If you're just replacing the stock filter with a K&N replacement filter, you're not improving the flow of the intake, which is what increases your horsepower - not to mention the bigger filter that comes with a cold air intake. The cold air intake would give you a bigger performance boost.

Don't try to get by on cheap alternatives... go with the K&N cold air intake for your model car. Yes, the filter won't be protected from idiotic ventures into high water but if hydro-locking an engine is a concern, you really need to buy a boat.
If you aren't hot rodding your ride, the K&N filter will surpass the quality of any direct filter replacement for the stock one that's there now but I hardly think you will notice any gains from just a filter replacement.
The cold air intake system from K&N is the way to go. Parts will be higher quality, the install will go smoothly, and replacement parts will be much more available. Yes, the filters are washable but does that make them indestructible? I doubt it. You will want to replace it sometime down the road and K&N will be that much more available to you.

the cold air are much better but if you are not mechanically skilled they are hard to install, the K&N ones just drop into the stock airbox. and the cold air intakes make the car sound alot better. just stay out of big puddles cause if you run through one you might hydrolock your engine which is very very bad
