gestational diabetes is a temporary diabetic condition during pregnancy that is generally cured by giving birth. it is controlled in most cases by diet alone. uncontrolled it leads to large birth weight in the baby and many other problems. her doctor can explain how important it is to monitor her diet and blood sugar.
gd is a good indicator that the mother will develop type II diabetes in her lifetime. type II is controlled by diet and in extreme cases, medication.

Gestational Diabetes...
It's basically Temporary Type 2 Diabetes.
I have it too...
You have to watch your diet, limit your carbs and sugar...or else you have to be on insulin (and give yourself shots everyday)
It's no fun...but it's really not that bad...you just have to be careful of what you eat and not let your blood sugar get too high.
If she does not treat it...she gives her baby a 50% chance of having juvenile diabetes after birth...so make sure she follows doctors orders and watches her diet and takes the insulin if they say to...
If she does treat it correctly she has a 1% chance of having it after the pregnancy, although obviously 99% of the time...it's cured after pregnancy (It's basically the placenta creating hormones that causes insulin resistance...so your pancreas is working over time to make insulin, but the placental hormones aren't allowing your natural insulin to counter act the sugar - so when the placenta is gone...the diabetes is gone)
If she does treat it and it does go away...she still has a 50% chance of getting Type 2 Diabetes when she's older...although...that is almost 100% dependant on her lifestyle. If she loses the weight, stays fit, has a healthy diet and exercises regularly...she may be able to avoid it all together.
So basically ...it's not a death sentence by any means...but it is definately something that needs to be monitored and treated for her sake and the sake of the baby.
Good luck :)

"What is gestational diabetes?
Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women - about 135,000 cases of gestational diabetes in the United States each year.
We don't know what causes gestational diabetes, but we have some clues. The placenta supports the baby as it grows. Hormones from the placenta help the baby develop. But these hormones also block the action of the mother's insulin in her body. This problem is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother's body to use insulin. She may need up to three times as much insulin.
Gestational diabetes starts when your body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Without enough insulin, glucose cannot leave the blood and be changed to energy. Glucose builds up in the blood to high levels. This is called hyperglycemia."
