We live in a fairly commercial area in a student infested town the UK. Our house is surrounded by shops, a market, banks etc. The entrance to our house is via an alley which also leads on to the Thames. Our door is a non-descript rusty metal door. The house is located above a bank and it's not that obvious that people live there (and we kind of like to keep it this way).
The problem is that our alley, and in particular our door seem like the obvious place to urinate in the mind of the average young british bloke. And they do that quite often. It's becoming quite a nuisance.
We thought of using a web cam and publish their photos on the web, but that could just lead to more people coming to piss at our door for their 15 microseconds of fame. We also heard of special sprays that are used to prevent dogs from urinating but we don't know much about that.
How can we prevent people from urinating on our door?
Any thoughts? Our door suffers, please help

One lead of a 12-volt auto battery can be connected to the door. The other lead should be connected to anything they might lean against, or grab with the hand. The electrolytes in urine will complete the circuit. I'd still do the video, though. There's money to be made on the web!

Hmm that's a toughie. Maybe you could set up a portaloo nearby and people might use that instead? Or you could get a big ugly dog to attack people. Or put a sign put saying that it's a conservation area and excessive urine will cause plants & animals in the Thames to die... Or put up a big yellow sign saying CCTV in operation here, No Urinating. Big yellow signs are good. Or a big yellow sign that says, "Our door suffers. Please do not urinate on it."

If it was me, I would install a 500W lamp with a PIR so that anyone coming near would be illuminated in the brightest of lights ....... that may slow them or even stop them ..... it sounds like your doorway is dark so a bright light may well help, but as above one that shines when they come near. You could also try a humerous notice suggesting that their urine will be collected and tested by HM Customs and revenue for DNA profiling ..... a bit like the taxman taking the p*ss .......

A big dog on the chain by the door with enough length of chain to keep anyone from getting close:)

In the large agrcultural areas of the USA, electric fences are very common, especially were there is grazing livestock. People quickly learn not to pee on a fence out there.

Just put up a sign that says this area monitored by video.
Let me reword that....This area is under video surveillance.

is it possible that you could get a sensor hooked up to a loud speaker? that way as soon as they pee there -you could have a loud voice telling them to CEASE AND DESIST!!! lol!!
Those videos would probably keep you guys amused for a long time if it were possible wouldn't it? to watch their reaction.....lol...
