No they cant, they will be able to survive in them for a little while, but they will eventually die. They need a larger tank, at least 10 gallons until they get to be about 4 inches, then they need to be moved into an even bigger tank. They also need filtration, heat and stable water conditions or else they will die off.

A lot of people think that goldfish will grow to the container that they are kept in, but this is not true. If kept in a to small container they will be stunted and years will be taken off of their life.

The best thing to do is go and get a small 2-5g tank with a filter, and keep small fish that will stay small such as Betta's, white-clouds, zebra danios, and guppies.

I hope that this helped.

Dont even get a 5 gallon. Its not even close, and its a waste of time. the conventional goldfish (comets and commons) develop to 16 inches and desire fifty 5 gallons for a unmarried fish. in case you dont desire your goldfish to seem sickish, you want to get rid of them if all youre going to purchase is a 5 gallon. Goldfish get dealt with the worst because human beings dont imagine they prefer tremendous tanks. yet they do. Goldfish are pond fish, not bowl fish. Theres really a distinction.

Goldfish are very dirty little creatures and need a fairly large tank and a good filter... but NO HEAT.

Goldfish are cold water fish and should be kept at 60-65. If you keep them at the wrong temp, it will stress them immensely. Too much stress and the immune system is compromised. So eventually they sicken and die.

Common comets can live for up to 15 years.

NO NOOO !!! each goldfish usually needs 20 gallons of water. Bowls are bad because goldfish need lots of surface area, and they are dirty fish. They need a filter too. Bubblers are good. Pet stores want you to overstock your tank because the fish will die, and you buy more....and because they make more money if you buy 10 fish rather then 3 fish.

YA KNOW, Im getting awefully sick and tired of repeating myself.
What part of GOLDFISH CANNOT LIVE IN BOWLS is so hard to understand??????????

Baby-juvenile fancy goldfish need 10 gallons PER fish. (orandas, fantails, moors, ryukins, ect.)
While baby-juvenile long bodied goldfish need 20 gallons PER fish. (COMMONS, COMETS, SHUBUNKINS)
They need ALOT OF FILTRATION because they excrete ALOT of ammonia. They also need a high amount of dissolved oxygen in the water because they have primitive gills. Thats why they need cooler water temps because cooler water holds more dissolved oxygen then warmer water.
ADULT commons, comets, and shubunkins will need 50 gallons PER fish because they grow to be 12-14 inches. They also have a lifespan of 30 yrs. Keeping a goldfish in a bowl is equal to keeping a dog in the cubbard underneath the bathroom sink or a child in a closet.

Goldfish produce a huge amount of waste, so they need the largest of tanks possible with excellent filter system or else they will be forced to live in toxic water, and we soon die. I even keep my Betta in a 5 gallon tank with filter. Just because they can survive in small amounts of water, that doesn't mean it is natural or healthy for them to do so for extended periods of time.

omg those people that are telling you that they can't are liars. you totally can have ten of those fish in a half-gallon bowl with no filtration or aeration!!!111!!! LOLZOMGBBQROFLMAO

Sian: There's no reason to be a wench just because you were proven wrong before. I gave you links showing you the proper environment to raise goldfish, and you blew me off. You had the nerve to personally attack someone who gave you good advice. If you keep it up, you will be reported and removed. Knock it off and grow up.

no that would be too many fish for that small of a bowl. One fish that is one inch would be ideal. One inch/gallon is the rule of thumb. So a 10 gallon tank could have 10 one inch fish or five 2 inch fish.

no ... that is way to small for a goldfish . they need atleast 5 gals of water per fish . they produce alot of waste . there water should be changed often . you should have a filter to help get rid of some of the waste .

Yes. Don't expect your pet to live to be more than two years old, though. Really, a goldfish should have a nice aquarium with a nice undergravel filter.
