It's two liquids that react to emit light.
hydrogen peroxide and phenyl oxalate ester
I believe the shaking just speeds up the reaction by mixing the two liquids faster.

A glow stick contains two compounds, a phenyl oxalate ester, and hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide is stored in a small glass ampoule within the tube, which breaks when the user bends the tube. The tube is then shaken to mix the peroxide in the ampoule with the surrounding ester in the tube, and a chemical reaction takes place which emits light. This is why you'd hear a cracking noise when bending a glowstick to activate it.

The molecules have metastable levels for the electrons. So, when the electrons are excited, they don't decay back to the ground state immediately, but go back in two steps, staying in the middle step for a while. And the last step is the same energy difference that makes visable light. So all the molecules have electrons loosing energy at different rates, so there is always one electron that is at the stage where it is loosing the exact amount of energy that gives visable light.

Glow sticks are comprised of hydrogen, urine from a pregnant black welfare hoochie, and sea water. You have to shake it to make all that goodness come together.
