When one drives a car with the steering wheel on the left and drives on the right side of the road, the driver is facing oncoming traffic at or near the center of the road.

With the steering wheel on the right and driving on the left side of the road, the driver is still facing oncoming traffic at or near the center.

This was the standard accepted by the US with a "left" wheel, and the same standard accepted by those countries with a "right" wheel.

England still drives on the left. Europe changed in the late 60s or early 70s.

It was an expensive change to make. New road signs, traffic circles etc.
They had advertised in every manner for a year that on a certain day, at 12:00 noon, all traffic in Europe must come to a STOP, then change lanes.
