when i am older and have my own house, i want it to look really nice, so i want to build a pond in my backyard. I would love to put turtles in there, but i know nothing about it. what kind of turtles, would they survive? i live on long island NY, so it mite be cold in the winter so i would take them inside or something. what other animals would i be able to put in there so they could live peacefully?

yeh in the winter take them out. trutles can eat feeder fish, shrimps and small peices of meat. also be careful coz they really bite hard. dont put normal goldfish in it coz they will eat it. and kois can be placed near he turles. but they cost about 50 dollars a small fish but they breed and no two r the same.

red-eared sliders are the turtles most commonly found in ponds. try to look on the web for a wildlife map for your part of NY, so you can select a species that's normally around. that way you know that it'll be ok to survive the winter outside. (also check with fish&game, some places have laws against owning native species as pets).

be aware that turtles aren't fish, which is to say, fish stay in the pond unless they get eaten, but turtles will go on walk-about if they feel like leaving.

Just make sure the turtles you get are NOT snapping turtles, they ate our baby ducks. I think box turtles would be what you would want. They bury themselves in the mud/dirt in the winter time. A pair of ducks would keep the snails and bugs down too. Have fun with your pond.

Some painted turtles would probably be the easiest to deal with. I doubt very seriously if they would survive the winter.
You could put some feeder fish in your pond. Anything living will be eaten by the turtles.
