Think about it in this way -
What is the result of adding an even and an odd number? You have to have one of each, since there is one more book in the second pile than the first. If the first pile has an even number, the second pile has an odd number, and vice versa.

Approach your other math problems this way - think about the situation, and use an example if needed. For this one, say one of the piles has 8 books and go from there.

if you divide 28 into 2 groups its 14 and 14 and if you take one book away to put it in the other pile you have 13 and 15 and thats a 2 book difference instead of a one book difference
