Romania is a country in Southeastern Europe. Romania borders Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and Moldova to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south. Romania has a stretch of sea coast along the Black Sea, and the eastern and southern Carpathian mountains run through its center.

Historic Bucharest (Romanian: Bucureştit) is a major tourist attraction, is the country's capital and largest city. Romania has been an active member of NATO since 2004, and is also an acceding country to the European Union. The EU Accession Treaty was signed in early 2005, and Romania is due to join the European Union on January 1, 2007. Starting on January 1, 2007, Romania will have the seventh largest population and the ninth largest territory in the EU. The accession of Romania and Bulgaria, as expected in 2007, will complete the fifth enlargement of the EU that had started in May 2004.

The following is the lead in to a file on Romania.

Aiming to reveal the part played by the Romanians and their ancestors in world history, this work sets forth, in a very brief and accessible manner, the most significant events and salient people who have made up the Romanian saga from its beginnings to the day.
The writing is easy to read by all those who have an interest in South Eastern Europe, who are curious to learn more about Romania's origins and past, and want to become acquainted with its people and traditions beyond and against set opinions and poor cliché images of the Dracula's or Ceausescu's kind.
The communist rule kept Romania isolated from the Western world for almost half a century, which made it difficult for her or almost denied her free access to the flow of knowledge and information, to the Western standards and systems of values.
The present mini-guide is intended to fill in the gap of information and highlight the Romanian experience from the historian's viewpoint, which may reassert the European vocation of this country.

Romania's modern history is as haunting as its old Dracula legend: The brutal reign of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu ended in 1989, but the country is still plagued by a past of poverty and political uncertainty. Its capital, Bucharest, is only just beginning to break from the post-communist nightmare of polluting traffic, massive potholes, roaming dogs and panhandling children. And yet Romania remains appealing to visitors, offering an entirely different culture from what you'll find elsewhere in Europe. It has some of the most stunning mountain scenery on the continent, and many parts of the countryside seem untouched by modern history. For adventurous travelers, the eerie castles, charming medieval villages and painted monasteries hidden away in deep forests more than make up for the often drab cities and the irritating bureaucracy that lingers from the country's communist past.

Hi, My brother went to Romania two times a couple of years ago with some people that go to his church. He said it's a very poor country. There isn't any air conditioning or anything like we have. And it's very hot in the summer months. I think he had to sleep on a cot or the floor. They have a lot of orphan children- a lot of orphan homes. He said it's a sad place, but the people there love to have visitors. They welcome them with open arms. As far as how it looks, I'm not sure if it's a pretty place or not. I do know that my brother wants to go back someday. Hope this helped a little.
