It's not so much numbers themselves that are beautiful, it's the incredibly varied patterns of relations between them.

Numbers and the relations between them are the most abstract things we know of - which means they apply more widely to more things than any other sort of thing.

With number relations you can describe the structure of anything. Not only that, you can describe structures that don't exist and perhaps can't possibly exist in any other way.

With very simple algorithms ('math recipes') you can generate structures of fantastic beauty. An example is the simple recipe that generates The Mandelbrot Set. If you've never seen this, just go to Google, enter the word 'mandelbrot', then click on Images and Search. Then try the word 'fractal'.

This is just a taste of the beauty of number relations/structures.
